On 10 October, Chen Min’er, Party Secretary of Tianjin, and Zhang Gong, Deputy Party Secretary and Mayor of Tianjin, visited Tianjin University to study and implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s reply letter to all faculty and students. Chen Min’er stressed that Tianjin University should keep firmly in mind General Secretary Xi’s earnest instructions, take the 130th anniversary of its founding as a new starting point, uphold the correct political direction, focus on major national strategic needs, strengthen basic research and key technological breakthroughs, improve the quality of talent cultivation, accelerate the building of a world-class university with Chinese characteristics, and better serve economic and social development, so as to make greater contributions in writing a new chapter of the Chinese path to modernization in Tianjin.
Municipal leaders Wang Lijun and Zhang Ling, together with Yang Xianjin, Party Secretary of Tianjin University, and President Chai Liyuan, joined the visit.
Chen Min’er and Zhang Gong visited the Zheng Dong Library of Tianjin University to view an exhibition of scientific research achievements and its distinctive collections, functional rooms and reading areas. At the National Key Laboratory for High-Performance Roll Materials and Composite Forming, they were briefed on university-enterprise joint development, scientific and technological problem-solving, commercialization of achievements and product applications, and had cordial exchanges with faculty and students. They fully affirmed the university’s achievements in discipline development, research and innovation, and cultural education, extended congratulations on the university’s 130th anniversary on behalf of the CPC Tianjin Municipal Committee and Tianjin Municipal People’s Government, expressed sincere greetings to all faculty, students and alumni, and thanked the university for its contributions to Tianjin’s development.
In a subsequent discussion with the university leadership, Chen Min’er and Zhang Gong listened to a briefing on Tianjin University’s work. They noted that General Secretary Xi Jinping attaches great importance to higher education and always keeps it close to his heart. On the occasion of the university’s 130th anniversary, he wrote back to all faculty and students, expressing high expectations and further pointing the way forward for the university’s development. This is not only Tianjin University’s highest honor, but also a tremendous encouragement to officials and the general public across the city, injecting strong spiritual momentum into Tianjin’s development. The Municipal Committee and Municipal Government will earnestly study and implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi’s reply and his important statements on education, and, in conjunction with thoroughly implementing his important remarks made during his inspection tour in Tianjin, will provide full support for Tianjin University’s development and promote high-quality development of higher education.
Chen Min’er and Zhang Gong stressed that Tianjin University, as China’s first modern university, has been entrusted with a new mission in the new journey of advancing Chinese modernization. They expressed the hope that the university will keep General Secretary Xi’s earnest instructions firmly in mind, maintain a vigorous and enterprising spirit, and strive to enhance its capacity in university governance and talent cultivation so as to accelerate its development into a world-class university with Chinese characteristics. The university should uphold the correct political direction, take Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era as its guiding principle, strengthen the Party’s overall leadership, fully implement the Party’s educational policy, stay true to the original aspiration of cultivating talent for the Party and the country, and fulfil the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, guiding young students to set great ambitions to serve and strengthen the country and to become responsible strivers. They emphasised that the university should adhere to the “Four-Orientation”, focus on major national strategic needs, actively build strategic science and technology strength, and continuously produce original scientific and technological innovations to better support China’s high-level self-reliance and self-improvement in science and technology, thus contributing to building China into a leading country in education and science and technology and advancing Chinese modernization. They called for promoting integration and innovation, actively adapting to trends of disciplinary and industrial convergence, coordinating basic and applied research, making full use of platforms such as the Tiankai Higher Education Science and Technology Innovation Park, and strengthening collaborative innovation that links universities, enterprises and research institutes, so as to enhance the capacity for scientific and technological innovation at the source, facilitate more local transformation of scientific and technological achievements, and foster and develop new quality productive forces to better empower Tianjin’s high-quality development. Furthermore, they urged the university to remain demand-oriented, improve mechanisms aligning talent development with economic and social needs, take emerging engineering education reform as a guiding driver to optimize discipline structure, deepen reforms in teaching and research, innovate teaching methods and enrich teaching scenarios, thereby improving the quality of talent cultivation and producing more outstanding graduates suited to the needs of modernization. The university should also uphold first-class standards, further improve its modern university governance system, build a high-caliber faculty, promote sound professional ethics, campus ethos and study style, foster a clean and vibrant campus culture, care for students’ physical and mental wellbeing, and maintain campus safety and stability.
